Health & FitnessA personal trainer or small gym owner

When a client has an old injury or a medical condition, I want to design something safe for them, so training does not make things worse.

Khi một học viên có chấn thương cũ hoặc bệnh nền, tôi muốn thiết kế chương trình an toàn cho họ, để việc tập không làm mọi thứ tệ hơn.

Job context

Who
A coach without medical training
When
At the first session and whenever pain appears
Trigger
A client mentioning back pain after three weeks of training
Situation
The medical information sits with the client, who usually does not tell all of it
Constraints
Cannot diagnose, and has no access to medical records

5 Pains

  • Clients do not disclose their history

    High

They fear being turned away, so they report the mildest version.

Root cause: Full disclosure risks being refused

  • Cannot separate normal soreness from warning pain

    High

The same description can be routine or a reason to stop immediately.

Root cause: That distinction is medical, and coaches do not hold it

  • No channel to the treating clinician

    High

Doctors and coaches almost never speak.

Root cause: The two sit in systems with no point of contact

  • Turning someone away costs income

    Medium

People with conditions need training most and are riskiest to accept.

Root cause: The professional risk is not compensated by any fee

  • Does not know the limit of their responsibility

    Medium

The line between coaching and medical advice is blurred in practice.

Root cause: No professional standard draws that boundary specifically enough

    Emotional

5 Existing Solutions

A solution is not the same thing as a product — a customer can hire a behaviour or a workaround too.

  • A pre-exercise health questionnaire

    Product

Protects legally and depends entirely on truthful answers.

  • Require a doctor's clearance

    Service

Moves risk to the qualified party and loses most people who dislike paperwork.

  • Take a specialist certification

    Service

Genuinely extends capability and still does not grant diagnosis.

  • Default to the safest possible exercises

    Behaviour

A sensible defence that slows progress for everyone without issues.

  • Ask the client to relay a question to their doctor

    Workaround

The only channel between the two professions, running through the patient.

2 Opportunity Gaps

  • The clinician and the coach work on the same body with no channel between them.

Why existing solutions fail: Records belong to healthcare, programmes to fitness, and neither side is paid to bridge them, so the patient becomes the only transmission line.

Potential opportunity: A short movement-restriction summary written by the clinician, short enough to hand to a coach.

  • Full disclosure risks refusal, so the intake system rewards under-reporting.

Why existing solutions fail: The questionnaire exists to protect the provider legally rather than to gather information, so it is designed for a purpose other than safety.

Potential opportunity: Separating disclosure from the accept-or-refuse decision, so honesty carries no risk.
